Stäubli connectors facilitate the nationwide compatibility of alternative power sources in Czechia

12. 03. 2024 | The Fire and Rescue Service of the Czech Republic relies, among other things, on Stäubli 16BL connectors to deal with electricity accidents or planned outages. Their use is safe and fast and the basic ability to work on electrical equipment is sufficient for working with them.

Power outages as a threat

The Czech Republic government document Concept of Population Protection until 2020 with a view to 2030 evaluated large-scale power outages as a possible threat to the Czech Republic. It is, therefore, necessary to increase the energy resilience of the Czech Republic and to be as prepared as possible for electricity accidents, planned outages, and other possible dangers causing the disruption of electricity supplies.

One of the institutions that deal with possible energy outages is the Fire and Rescue Service of the Czech Republic. They already have experience in supplying electricity after many natural disasters, such as Hurricane Herwart in 2017. Alternative sources will also find use in events such as the tornado in 2021, which interrupted supplies in Moravia, or even more common events such as wind lines or frost, or planned outages that may disrupt the operation of crisis infrastructure facilities.

16BL connectors

In any crisis situation, it is necessary that the solution used is as simple as possible and that it is possible to use it even in difficult conditions. This is exactly what the Stäubli 16BL connectors do, and especially for these reasons, firefighters have decided to use them in their mobile backup units.

The backup power supply is housed in a container that is ready to be quickly moved to where it is needed. The container is equipped with a diesel generator, a control cabinet, a terminal box, and a cabling set. There are cables of different cross-sections and different connections for connecting objects. Stäubli connectors can be used to connect larger loads (above 125A / 3).

The electrician of the Fire and Rescue Service of the Moravian-Silesian Region says about cooperation with Stäubli:

"We chose Stäubli as our connector supplier mainly because their use is amazingly simple and even a layman in gloves can do it in the dark. The use is very intuitive and the big advantage is that the person who works with the connectors does not have to be an electrician.

If you want to be sure that you will be connected without any problems and very quickly in the event of a crisis, you should also choose the agreed standard at your connection point, therefore Stäubli connectors for higher outputs.

The Fire and Rescue Service of the Czech Republic highly recommends nationwide standardization and compatibility of backup sources and connection points. The connection of the Stäubli connector takes a few seconds, while the older connection solution can take up to 30 minutes, requires special tools, and can only be performed by a person with electrical engineering education and valid training according to the law of The Czech Republic.”

Why did Czech firefighters choose Stäubli 16BL connectors?

  • The design and simplicity of the connector lock allows you to work in insulating gloves
  • Mechanical coding eliminates the possibility of incorrect wiring - for example in the dark
  • An additional locking element allows the connectors to be used safely in a public place
  • Any direction of unwinding long cables - there is the same connector at both ends
  • The set of connection adapters also allows connection to the belt directly to the switchboard or instead of a knife fuse
  • All Stäubli connectors have valid certificates for use in electrical engineering
  • For work with connectors, professional competence in electrical engineering according to the law of The Czech Republic
  • Standardization of connection points eliminates security risks for people and property
  • Nationwide compatibility allows firefighters to work together
