New Megawatt Charging System

12. 03. 2024 | Stäubli announces its Megawatt Charging System (MCS) that allows charging of electric commercial vehicles with charging power of up to 4.5 MW.

As more EVs hit the road in long-distance and heavy-duty applications, charging these larger capacity batteries within a reasonable time has been a significant challenge. To overcome this obstacle, the global association Charging Interface Initiative e.V. (CharIN) has been working with industry leaders, including Stäubli, on developing the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard, to promote interoperability as the global standard for charging commercial vehicles of all kinds.

"We are proud to announce the Stäubli Megawatt Charging System (MCS), which marks a significant advancement in EV charging technology," said Winnijar Kauz, Head of Business e-mobility of Stäubli Electrical Connectors. "Our new system provides a reliable, flexible, and fast charging solution for the EV industry, demonstrating our commitment to developing innovative and sustainable solutions that support the transition to cleaner energy systems."

Stäubli's MCS has been designed as per the CharIN task force specifications, with a strong focus on durability and ease of use. The use of a liquid cooled cable enables faster charging times and greater flexibility, making it a crucial element in sustainable transportation. Delivering up to 4.5 MW of charging power, with a rated current of up to 3000 A and 1500 V, the Stäubli MCS effectively eliminates the challenges associated with commercial vehicle charging.

Product highlights:
Stäubli’s Megawatt Charging System consists of both the charging connector with cable for the infrastructure side as well as the inlet for the vehicle.
• Power up to 4.5 MW with a rated current up to 3000 A
• Customizable inlet according to customer specifications
• Proven Multilam contact technology
• Integrated safety features
• Standards: IEC 62196-1, IEC 62196-3, PD IEC/TS 63379
• Availability: Prototypes (1500 V) available now / full launch in parallel with standardization

The Stäubli MCS connector can be used to charge a wide variety of heavy-duty vehicles. Although the CharIN “standard” primarily focuses on Class 6, 7, & 8 commercial vehicles such as trucks, construction- and agricultural vehicles, the MCS connector can also be used for buses, vessels, aircraft, and other large battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Stäubli is committed to facilitating the shift towards more sustainable transportation through its high-voltage connection solutions. MCS prototypes with a rated current of 1500 V are currently available for testing and integration into customer products, with an official launch scheduled in parallel to the progress of standardization.
