FORUM OPTONICS 2019 welcomed professionals from leading Czechoslovak institutions. Lecturers presented topics focused on optical and photonic phenomenon, optical and laser systems, and opto-mechanical devices. FORUM OPTONICS offered to the professionals, businessmen and to the public, everything related to the fields of optics and photonics at one place.

Forum was organized by ČSSF (Czech and Slovak society for photonics) the main guarantor was RNDr. Dagmar Senderáková, CSc. The lectures were held in the Czech and Slovak language.

Light-driven motors/ Ing. Petr Jákl, Ph.D.
Light forces can be used in a broad area of application in both micro-world and outer space. The presentation deals with introduction to principles of optical forces and overview of successful experiment in the field of space programs, microscopy, microbiology, molecular chemistry and medicine.

The Czech Footprint in Astrophysics/ Mgr. Jan Tomáštík
Secrets of the universe are nowadays revealed with the significant help of Czech scientists, who contribute not only trough basic research, but also to the construction of telescopes on the opposite side of the planet. Ultra-high energetic cosmic rays (UHECR) are the most prominent carriers of deep space information. Detectors and telescopes from Prague and Olomouc are designed to their capture and analysis. This lecture will help you understand the role of Czech scientists and engineers in all of that.

Modern way of large optical surfaces measurement/ Mgr. Stanislav Michal
Measured data are important information needed to refine the production process and for final testing of each optical part. The presentation describes several options for large optical surfaces mappings. The method of the Swinging Arm Profilometer (SAP), its principle and the development it has undergone in the SLO laboratory in Olomouc is described in more detail.

The lecture deals with the principle of optical planar waveguides, technological processes to fabricate them and their uses.

Sensor structures for surface-enhanced Raman scattering/ Ing. David Mareš
Research and development focused on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The unique structures amplify the useful signal from the analyte and boost detection threshold up to 1010 times. Utilizing nanostructures with nanoparticles allows monitoring and high resolution detection of chemical and biological compounds or quantities of the analyte down to one molecule.

Extending the bandwidth of optical amplifiers using optically active bismuth ions/Ing. Jiří Šmejcký
At present, optical amplifiers for high-capacity optical communication systems are used in the narrow spectral C band of 1530-1560 nm, determined by erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) or planar amplifiers (EDPA) bandwidth. However, this range can be expanded by the L band up to wavelengths of 1610 nm, where the optical loss of telecommunication fibers is less than 0.1 dB / km when we combine the optically active erbium and bismuth ions with a suitable modifier, for instance Ge. In this respect, the development of optical amplifiers with an amplified spectral bandwidth greater than 80 nm is of great importance. The paper summarizes the results of research in this field.

Interferometric methods for investigation of optical properties of materials/ Doc. Norbert Tarjányi, Ph.D.
Optical interferometers are devices designed for observing and evaluating the interference of optical waves.  Optical interferometer is one of the most accurate devices to measure optical path differences at the order of wavelength of the optical radiation used. This allows us to investigate thoroughly different properties of materials. The lecture will include a brief introduction to the problem of light interference and construction of interferometers as well as several examples of their practical use.

Room-temperature multiferroic materials/ Dinara Sobola, Ph.D.
Multiferroics are perspective materials for microelectronics, spintronics and sensory technology. Multiferroics combines advanced properties of minimum two types of materials as: ferromagnetics, ferroelectrics and ferroelastics. The lecture is dedicated to the problems of these materials preparation and possible perspectives of its using at normal conditions.

Nano-scale interface analysis using an electron microscope and EBIC technique/ Ing. Nikola Papež
If we need to localize a pn junction, its inhomogeneities or observe defects in semiconductors, optical microscopes are reaching the limit of their use. However, there is the possibility to use an electron microscope. Instead of photons, electrons and the EBIC technique will be used for much more accurate interpretation, which we will talk about in this lecture more.

 Imaging by optical fibres/ Prof. Mgr. Tomáš Tyc, Ph.D.
Optical fibre bundles have been employed for transfering images in endoscopy for many years. However, in the recent years it has turned out that an image can be transferred even by a single fibre, which allows to observe e.g. neurons in the brain with a negligible damage to the tissue. In the talk, the basic principles of a single-fibre endoscope will be explained and demonstrated on simple experiments.

Optical methods for measuring the magnetic properties of materials/ Mgr. Jana Trojková, Ph.D.
The lecture deals with magneto-optical experimental methods with special emphasis on imaging of magnetic domains.

Transformation optics and invisibility cloaks/ Prof. Mgr. Tomáš Tyc, Ph.D.
To become invisible was a domain of phantasy for many centuries. However, thanks to the modern methods and materials in optics the invisible cloaking has become more realistic in the last ten years. In the talk, the basic principles of invisible cloaking will be explained and some of them will be demonstrated by simple experiments.

Development in the field of astronomical technology in recent years opens new possibilities for imaging of objects and events in the universe. The talk will briefly introduce basic principles of the most advanced devices with examples of recent results.
13:00 - 13:30 Compact high power diode pumped solid state lasers for applied research, development and industry/ Ing. Jan Vanda, Ph.D.
Past decade rapid development of laser technologies is driven by the broad application of lasers in various fields of human doings primarily, from fundamental research towards mass production. Technology development gives a rise to demands not only regarding laser power, but also reliability and economy of service. Technology addressing many of such demands are solid state pulsed lasers hence there attracting a lot of attention in research and development, which makes lasers able to trigger sun surface-like temperatures available for common use. This ability is used in difficult materials processing, their surface treatment but also for interactions of matter with extreme energies, new properties discovery and expanding the knowledge in new areas.

It is possible to find commercially available lasers in all fields of industry, from packaging scribing to jet-engine blades manufacturing. Advancement in laser technologies and accessible and reliable pulsed laser sources allowed development of material treatment  and processing in every direction, often superseding conventional methods due to higher efficiency. At the same time, pulsed lasers created a new application areas, which were not accessible in the past. In such areas it is worth to mention tuning of material physical properties, laser shock processing or production of super-hydrofobic and super-hydrofilic surfaces as well as micromachining of common and exotic materials.

Extremely precise timing measurements of charged particles/ Mgr. Tomáš Komárek
In Olomouc, we are developing a particle detector. It measures time extremely precisely through Cherenkov radiation. Even light passes only a few milimeters within our resolution – just such a precision is needed at the LHC, the largest particle accelerator ever built.

Utilization of the Schlieren Method for the Study of Laser Cutting of Materials/ Doc. RNDr. Libor Mrňa, Ph.D.
The laser cutting process is physically complicated. One of the key roles is cutting gas, the flow of which removes the melted material from the cutting kerf. Gas flowing through the cutting kerf cannot be observed directly because it is surrounded by metal.Practically, the only way to make this flow available to the study is to replace the metal with a block of glass with a pre-created cutting kerf, and then visualize the flow using the schlieren method. A number of experiments with the real process parameters were performed as in the real cutting process and a number of experimental data - schlierograms were obtained, that showing the flow within the cutting kerf. Nanostructures and their exploitation in LED and laser diodes/ Doc. Jaroslav Kováč, Ph.D.
Reduction of structure dimensions introduced besides increase of elements density in integrated circuits also additional benefit in possibility of structure fabrication in a size of ones to tens of nanometers., which are able to significantly influence properties of optoelectronic devices such as LED or laser diodes. By implementation of structures such as nanodots, nanowires, nano pillars, quantum dots or photonic structures it is possible to enhance their properties and in the same time evade usual problems with lattice mismatch and stress in structure which cause mainly defects in semiconductors.

The lecture is focused on introduction of the applications of optical wireless links in the 21st century. Photonic communication and visible light communication (VLC) will be introduced in the presentation, too.

Generation of short pulses with high peak power using stimulated Raman scattering will be presented.

European network for precise frequency and time transfer from atomic and optical clocks/ Ing. Ondřej Číp, Ph.D.
Research and development in the field of frequency and time transmission is the domain of Europe where a dense network of photonic fibers are available across the continent. The lecture provides a overview of techniques for transmitting the most accurate signals from both atomic and optical clocks currently in operation in Europe.

13:00 - 13:30 Transmission of optical frequencies via optical fibres in the Czech Republic/ Mgr. Lenka Pravdová, Ph.D.
Optical fibers allow transfer of super stable wavelengths from optical atomic clocks over long distances. We present the current state of photonic networks in the Czech Republic that transmit these signals to industrial applications.
13:30 - 14:00 3D photonic technologies for application on a chip and optical fiber/ Prof. Ing. Dušan Pudiš, Ph.D.
Modern 3D submicrometer laser technologies based on polymers open new platform for    fabrication new concepts of photonic components. These can be directly integrated on a chip or optical fiber and can create wide variety of sensor devices.
